Amy Duncan – Administrator

I am the wife of an amazing and wonderful man, Sean, and mother to two incredible girls. I confess that I did grow up in Oklahoma, but ever since my husband and I moved to Austin in 1995, I have become a loyal and happy Texan.

My first job here in Texas was as a parent educator working with teen parents at a local high school. I learned a great deal about parenting and about myself during that time, and I really grew passionate in my belief that there has to be a better way to educate our children than what is currently being offered in many schools. I continued my work with young parents at a charter school here in Austin, and saw many innovative teaching methods. However, I still didn’t feel like I had found “The Method” by which I wanted to educate my own children. During this time, however, I did discover that I really enjoyed working with computers. I was fascinated by what one could do with technology, and how much more efficient a non-profit could run when it integrated technology into its business practices. I made the leap into the techie field, while still searching for the right place for my children to go when they were ready for school.

When it came time for my oldest to go to school, I knew that public school was not the answer for us for a variety of reasons. Therefore, we found a private school that seemed to fit her needs. She was there for a couple of years before we decided that it was not working for us anymore and we needed to move on. My youngest was getting older and it was time to start thinking about her education as well, so we decided to homeschool.

Let me tell you… it takes a special parent to really homeschool their child! I discovered pretty quickly that I needed some serious help. However, I also enjoyed being with my girls so much and seeing them learn and grow. I got involved with a brand new private school called AHB, a school that blended the best of home and private education, and then spent the next 6 years pouring my heart and soul into helping develop a school home where my children could thrive.  I left with many fabulous memories and a very dear friend, Georgie, with whom I dreamed about a better way for education and saw that dream come true in AHB.

I was honored to accept the Administrator position at Trinity in 2009, and have been feeling that blessing ever since.  I have the opportunity to be a part of a truly amazing community of individuals, families, and organizations that live the principles I thought existed only in a “Perfect World.”  Each day I come to work is uplifting, energizing, and rewarding – like one big hug!  With my passion for children, technology, and making a difference in the world, I’ve found a place where I can put all that energy to good use.

My future plans include continuing my education, most immediately through the 2012-13 Certificate in Nonprofit Leadership & Management program through the Center for Community-Based & Nonprofit Organizations at ACC and the Texas Association of Nonprofit Organizations.  My intent is to develop a non-profit ranch that utilizes natural horsemanship principles to help individuals reclaim their power, in particular girls and women who have experienced trauma.
