What are we doing to help?

Hope Food Pantry Volunteer Descriptions as of April 2008
Capital Area Food Bank (CAFB) Pickup: Minimum of 1 volunteer
- May volunteer one or more times a month

Occurs every Tuesday at 1:30 p.m.

Must have truck, van, or other large vehicle
-
Volunteer must be able to lift 50 lbs or have someone with them that can
-
Must have a CAFB card with them, sign in and out of CAFB, wear closed toe shoes, and sign for order
-
Load boxes of groceries into vehicle and transport them from the CAFB located at 8201 S. Congress Ave. (between William Cannon & Slaughter) to Hope Food Pantry at 600 E. 50th St.

Check Pick List to make sure all items on list have been received

Sign Pick List and bring yellow copy back to Hope Food Pantry & put it in the Executive Director cubby hole on the file cabinets

May also do the Shop-For (see below)

Unload boxes at Hope Food Pantry

Place frozen items immediately in freezer and refrigerated items in refrigerators
-
Non-perishable items are left for stockers
-
This takes approximately 1 hour
Unpackers: 1 to 2 volunteers a week
- Meet CAFB Pickup Volunteer at Hope Food Pantry around 2 p.m. on Tuesday

Help unload boxes from vehicle and place them in the food pantry

Shop-For: 1 to 2 volunteers a week
- May volunteer one or more times a month

Done in conjunction with CAFB Pickup Tuesdays 1:30 p.m.

Volunteer must be able to lift 50 lbs

Go to the CAFB located at 8201 S. Congress Ave. (between William Cannon & Slaughter)

Must have a CAFB card with them, sign in and out of CAFB, wear closed toe shoes, and sign for order

Select and gather fresh produce and other groceries that are in the Shop-For area of the CAFB, such as large bags of potatoes. Get enough for at least 40 families.

Weigh all Shop-For items on the scale & sign for order

Bring the Shop-For items to Hope Food Pantry located at 600 E. 50th Street.

Refrigerate groceries that need to be kept cold
-
If done at the same time as CAFB pickup, Shop-For must be done after regular order is loaded into the vehicle
Produce Dividers: 2 to 4 volunteers a week
- May volunteer one or more times a month

Every Tuesday at 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Separate fresh produce and baked goods from Whole Foods and Starbucks into at least 40 bags
-
Place in plastic bins or refrigerate items if there is space
Stockers: 2 to 4 volunteers a week
- May volunteer one or more times a month

Occurs every Tuesday 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Stock shelves with order from CAFB by taking canned goods and other groceries out of boxes and place them on the appropriate shelves at the pantry by using the FIFO (First in, First out) method
-
FIFO is a CAFB requirement that ensures old groceries are given out before new groceries, so when stocking new groceries are to be placed behind current groceries

Organizes pantry shelves so they will be ready for easy packing
-
Place all non-can goods in storage bins
-
Must be able to lift 25 to 50 lbs
-

Open Pantry: Need 1 to 3 volunteers each day we are open (Thursdays & Fridays)
- Unlock door to pantry between 8:30 a.m. and 9:00 a.m.

Turn on lights in the pantry, hallway, and fellowship hall
-
Turn on air conditioner or heat in pantry and in the fellowship hall (Make sure the door between the sanctuary and the fellowship hall is open slightly on the left side to ensure proper airflow)

Invite David in to the pantry and pack him some groceries
-
Open the divider between the pantry and fellowship hall above the counter
-
Make coffee & put sugar, sweetener, spoons, cups, cream or milk on the counter for the clients
-
Also put a pitcher of ice water on the counter for the clients
-
Take off lids to all of the plastic bins
-
Stock any donations that are on the tables
-
When other volunteers arrive, let clients into the fellowship hall.

Separate produce and snacks if needed
-
Put together 20 bags of produce, bread, and pastries on the table closest to the fellowship hall
Packers: 3 to 8 volunteers twice a week
- Thursdays or Fridays each week from 10 a.m. to noon (or until orders are complete)

May volunteer one or more times a month
-
Receive intake sheet from Interviewer that has family info and special requests
-
Use the number of adults and children in the household to decide how much of each food item should be given to each family
-
We always try to provide corn, green beans, beans,juice, soup, tomato sauce or other tomato product, fruit, snacks, cereal, macaroni and cheese, canned meat (ex. tuna), pasta, dry beans, rice, peanut butter, bread, fresh produce, meat, and toilet paper.

During the time of the Interview, the client can make special requests that we try to provide if we have it.

Examples of these include cleaning supplies, hygiene items, baby food, baby wipes, trash bags, Pampers, clothes detergent, dish detergent, sugar, flour, coffee, oil, aluminum foil, condiments, feminine products, etc.

After Packers place all of the items for each family on the table, the groceries are packed, and carried to the counter. The Packer will call the name of the client so he or she can take their groceries.

May help clients take groceries to their car

Straighten pantry shelves and fellowship hall
-
Break down and recycle extra boxes
-
Put up coffee supplies and clean the coffee pot and water pitcher
-
Take out the trash and recycling
Close Pantry: 1 to 2 volunteers
- Set thermostat in kitchen and fellowship hall (In Summer, set to 85 degrees on Thursdays and 89 degrees on Fridays; In Winter, turn completely off)

Make sure everyone is gone
-
Turn off lights in kitchen, hallway and fellowship hall
-
Make sure all doors are locked in the church
Interviewer: 1 to 2 volunteers each day we are open (Thursdays and Fridays)
- Needs to know some Spanish or be willing to learn some or have someone translate
-
Need general knowledge of computers or be willing to learn. We use an Access database.

9:45 a.m. to noon (or until orders are complete)
-
Get computer and printer from the cabinet in the hallway and set it up
-
Get referral materials and other needed items from the top drawer of the file cabinet on the right
-
Conduct the lottery that selects clients and tells us in what order we will serve them (See attached for more specific info)
-
Interview clients (See attached for more specific info) and answer basic questions
-
Place client order sheet on counter for the Packers
-
Put computer and printer in the cabinet and make sure it is locked
Translator: 1 volunteer each day we are open
- This volunteer should be bilingual in Spanish & English.
-
This person would assist with the interviews and when needed translate for clients that speak Spanish.
-
This volunteer would also help clients locate referrals.
-
This is also a 2 to 2 ½ hour commitment that can be done once a month or more often.
-
This person would need to be at the pantry by 9:45 a.m. on Thursday or Friday.
Miscellaneous Jobs:
- Return banana boxes to the Capital Area Food Bank Wednesday morning (current: Mark Lett)

Write thank you notes to contributors and volunteers (current: Jane Wise)
